Abstract
Geotechnical Seismic Isolation (GSI) is a potentially methodology that can be used to diminish the effect of earthquakes on structures. However, its application on bridges was object of limited contributions and this paper aims to fill this gap. Opensees was herein used to perform three-dimensional finite element analyses for several cases, such as traditional and isolated bridges subjected to earthquakes. Hundred earthquake records with different peak ground acceleration (PGA) have been considered to allow the consideration of different earthquake intensities. In addition, fragility curves have been derived based on the results of the three-dimensional finite element analysis. It has been found from the obtained results that the GSI is effective in reducing the probability exceedance the capacity limits of the bridge. The outcomes of this paper could be utilized by practitioners for the applications of GSI in the design and isolation of bridges.
